Somewhere in the last couple of years, miniature Japanese convenience store signs became a thing. Little illuminated FamilyMart, 7-Eleven and Lawson storefronts, magnet on the back, glowing on somebody's fridge. What exactly is a konbini light magnet?
A konbini is a Japanese convenience store. The word comes from the English "convenience", shortened the way Japanese tends to shorten things. The three big chains are 7-Eleven, Lawson and FamilyMart, and their backlit storefront signs are one of the most recognisable pieces of visual furniture in Japan. If you have walked around a Japanese city at night, you have seen them every few hundred metres.
A konbini light magnet is a miniature of that sign, with an LED inside and a magnet on the back. You put it on your fridge and it glows the way a konbini does at 2am.
The eight things that actually matter
1. Know how it is powered, and why
There are two systems and the right one depends on size. Our standard 10 cm sign has a built-in 300 mAh rechargeable lithium battery, charged over USB-C, giving 8 to 12 hours of light per charge. Our 5.5 cm mini runs on a single LR41 button cell, included and already fitted, giving 8 to 10 hours per battery.
The mini is not rechargeable, and that is a deliberate trade: a rechargeable cell and a charging port do not fit inside something 5.5 cm wide without making it thicker and uglier. LR41 is a standard size, costs very little, and swaps out in seconds. Neither system is better in the abstract — what matters is that the seller tells you which one you are getting before you buy, rather than after.
2. If it charges, it should charge over USB-C
Micro-USB in 2026 means hunting for a cable in two years. The standard sign charges over USB-C in 1 to 2 hours.
3. A size that matches where it is going
"Miniature" covers everything from 4 cm to 12 cm, and the difference is enormous in practice. The standard sign is 10 x 3 x 2.6 cm and weighs about 45 g — big enough to read as a storefront on a fridge door. The mini is 5.5 x 3.8 x 1.7 cm and 25 g, sized for a locker, a laptop stand or a shelf edge.
4. The light has to turn off
Some lit magnets stay on until the battery dies. Ours have 3 colours and 3 ambiance modes and a full off state, so they work as ordinary magnets whenever you want them to.
5. It has to hold, including on a stainless fridge
Plenty of modern stainless steel doors are not magnetic, and nobody tells you that until your magnet is on the floor. The magnetic back holds on any steel fridge door, and every unit ships with an adhesive magnetic mounting sheet for stainless finishes, walls, and anywhere else.
6. What is actually in the box
For the standard sign: the magnet, a USB-C charging cable, a magnetic mounting sheet and a printed gift box. For the mini: the magnet with its battery already fitted, and a magnetic mounting sheet. Either way it arrives ready to use, not in a polybag with a note about batteries sold separately.
