Three signs, three completely different moods. Here is what each one does, and where most people land once they have seen all three together.
Lawson — the calm one
Deep blue and white, with the milk can. Lawson is the sign that reads as design rather than advertising. It is the one that still looks right on a fridge in five years, and blue sits beautifully against stainless steel. The milk can is a leftover from the chain's origins as an American dairy — Lawson started in Ohio before becoming thoroughly Japanese.
Lit, it is the softest of the three. It is the sign for people who want the room to feel like a Japanese street at night rather than to announce it.
FamilyMart — the balanced one
Green and blue on white. More colour than Lawson, less volume than 7-Eleven, and it works against every fridge finish there is. FamilyMart also has the strongest sonic identity in Japan — the door chime is famous enough to have become a meme — so for a lot of people this sign arrives with a sound attached to it.
It is our narrow favourite by sales, and the one that is hardest to get wrong as a gift.
7-Eleven — the loud one
Orange, green and red on white. The most saturated of the three and the one that reads from across a room. It is also the most instantly recognisable, because 7-Eleven exists nearly everywhere — though the Japanese stores have a reputation among travellers that the ones back home do not.
Lit at night, it is the one that most convincingly does the thing you actually bought a konbini magnet for.
What people actually buy
We can answer this with our own numbers rather than an opinion. Across everything we have sold, the split is almost perfectly even:
- FamilyMart — about 36%
- 7-Eleven — about 33%
- Lawson — about 31%
27,000+ orders and no winner. That is unusual, and it tells you something: there is no best design. There are three equally loved ones, and whichever you pick first, the other two keep looking good.
So: get all three
The 3-pack is the right answer, and not as a sales line. It is what the object is for.
A single lit sign on a fridge door is a nice object. Three of them in a row is a street — the exact thing you were remembering when you decided you wanted one. The effect does not scale down. It only exists at three.
And the arithmetic agrees: the set costs less per magnet than buying the designs one at a time, so the cheapest route to owning all three is to buy all three now rather than to arrive there in three separate orders, which is what usually happens.
If you are only ever going to own one, pick on mood: Lawson to keep the kitchen calm, 7-Eleven for impact, FamilyMart if you want both. But the honest recommendation is the set.
The designs are identical apart from the artwork
Worth saying plainly, because people ask. All three share the same 10 x 3 x 2.6 cm body, the same 300 mAh battery, the same USB-C charging, the same 3 colours and 3 ambiance modes, and the same magnet. Choosing between them is purely aesthetic — no design is a compromise on the hardware.
Which one against which fridge
Stainless steel or white: all three work. Black: Lawson and FamilyMart hold their contrast best once the light is off. Which, again, is an argument for the set — you get to decide where each one goes after they arrive.
